Gillian Horgan
Droum East Photographs

Gillian Horgan was born in Ireland and educated at Trinity College, Dublin (BA, MA in Natural Sciences).  She worked as a research scientist in London and at Yale University before moving to New York.  Since 1985, she has lived in Glengarry County, Eastern Ontario.  After taking photographs for many years, she became a professional art photographer in 2006 with the establishment of Droum East Photographs.  She uses a Minolta 350 SLR film camera to take photographs that explore the relationship of form and colour, discovering hidden details and beauty in architecture and plants.  (She does not crop or change the photographs in any way).

Medium:  Film (Kodak 200), chromogenic prints

Why "Droum"? Gillian explains, "In Irish Gaelic, droum means a small hill. Droum East was the address of the seaside bungalow on the North coast of Co. Kerry, Ireland, where I spent magical summers with my brother and sisters, dogs and their puppies, cats and their kittens; where we ate huge slices of Irish soda bread; stayed up playing cards until 1 AM; hiked up mountains, had our hands sucked by calves; and believed that all was well with the world."
