Arthur Sheldon Phillips was an outstanding painter in the British tradition of watercolour painting, whose work has become increasingly sought after amongst collectors and marine enthusiasts. He is represented in the collections of the City Museum Art Gallery Birmingham, England, Baron Philipe de Rothschild, the Royal Mail and the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists to which he was elected.
Phillips was acclaimed to be extremely knowledgeable on
the architecture of the east coast fleet. The Thames barge or
sprit barge has a unique structure that enables just two men to
navigate the 90’ vessel with a sail area of 3000’-5000’, carrying
250 tons of cargo to and from various continental European
ports. At the turn of the century there were 2000 sail barges on
registry, today roughly 24 exist as charters. Many enthusiasts
and collectors alike have delighted in Sheldon Phillips paintings
of the annual barge race, a race that still exists today despite the
dwindling number of participants.
In 1981, A.S Phillips spent a summer in the Lac St. Louis region of Montreal. With a passion for seascapes and cityscapes, he was naturally drawn to the municipalities of Pointe-Claire, Beaconsfield, and Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue. Incredible works of art emerged that summer depicting cityscapes of the West Island as they existed over 25 years ago, masterful townscapes and marine paintings frozen in time by an extremely accomplished watercolorist. The showing will also exhibit original paintings from the Sheldon Phillips collection of international works.
To celebrate the occasion, we will be releasing the Sheldon Phillips Canadian print series: 20 sets of museum quality giclee prints representing landmarks mostly of the Lac St. Louis Region. Come and enjoy the experience!
Special on giclee prints until December 31
