Amrao Gill, an artist and a poet, has lived and worked in Boston since 1980. He was born in Chilla, a small village in Punjab, India, in 1951. Before he studied at The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, where he received a four-year diploma in Technical Painting (1983), Amrao had received a five-year diploma in applied arts from the College of Fine Arts Chandigarh (1972). He has had many group and solo shows both in India and the US, and was awarded the Punjab Lalit Kala Academy First Prize in painting in 1979. Amrao has worked for Sikh Dharma of Massachusetts, depicting Sikh history on large paintings (1984-1990), was an expert in fine arts at the Punjab School Education Board (1977-1980), and painted large murals on the evolution of life for the University Museum, Punjabi University (1973-1977).
